My APHA tobiano mare is out of an sorrel Overo mare and by a B&W Tovero Sire. She came out a bay tobiano with one blue eye. I bred her in feb. to our AQHA Palomino stallion. What are the chances she will throw a tobiano, or a overo or a tovero? Thanks..
Tansy, The more colour patterns a horse carries, the more chance they have of throwing a coloured foal. Your mare is very likely a tovero if she has one blue eye (may not look like it, but prob carries the gene). If this is the case, then she carries both tobiano and overo, and she has a 75% chance of throwing a coloured foal when bred to a solid coloured stallion. This is the rule extracted from my Equine Colour Genetics Book;
I would agree with Renee, that your mare is probably a tovero with having a blue eye. I would say your chances are higher for having a tobiano foal by a solid, non paint stallion. With the second in line being a tovero and lastly an overo. I have a tovero mare that when bred to a tobiano, produced tobiano, bred her to a solid that had a tobiano sire, produced a tobiano. Bred her to a solid, no known pinto genes, produced a tovero, re-bred her to that same stallion, produced a solid. I think the 75% is probably correct too, as this same tovero mare has had 7 foals and all have been colored except for 1, and that was this year's foal. You just never know what you're going to get as far as color goes unless you're dealing with a homozygous.
