My mare is a grey, born black, and she has this- I don't really know what you call it, I suppose mottling?- around her lower lip. Its right near her mouth, you have to lift her upper lip up to really see it. The only facial marking she has is a small star on her forehead, I think. I'll have to check back through the photos before she greyed out. She definately has no white markings on her legs or anywhere else.
On this site I've learned that horses don't have to have the big white faces and legs to be or carry the sabino gene and with her mottling, I am wondering if she could be too
I can't post any photos of her because I don't have the right software YET, and I'm sorry if I haven't been all that clear about, but really would apprieate you thoughts

I'm not a genetics expert by any means but it doesn't sound sabino to me. I have a couple of mares that have this mottling on their lip like you're talking about and they are not sabinos. I also DO have a sabino mare and she has definite white on her bottom lip. Here's a pic of her.

hi Tracy, you have a beautiful mare! Do you have any pics of your mares that do have the mottling on their lips? because I just want to see if it is the same as my mare (her name is Lollie). I was kinda hoping that she does have the sabino gene because I have been thinking about breeding her to our neighbours stallion, who is a pale palomino. I would have liked to get a pale buckskin with sabino leg markings from the pair- because when/if the foal greyed out, I'd end up with a horse that would be white/ really light grey with these cool black markings on the legs. Wouldn't that be a horse see?

I don't have any pictures, I'll try to take some for you soon. Again, I'm not an expert but the funny thing about Sabino is that it doesn't always pass on and sometimes it can crop up out of nowhere. My mare came from two bays with zero sign of sabino, it was quite the surprise!

I've been told my sabino mare mare not produce sabino but would have a higher chance by breeding her to a sabino stallion.

Sabino is a funny thing alright. Guess I'd better start looking for a buckskin sabino stallion then if I want that foal then! How did you get a chestnut from two bays? I thought that- wait a minute I see it now, one of them must have been heterozyous and carried the chestnut gene.
I can't wait to get the software to post pics!

Pretty crazy huh. I only had a 6% chance of getting a chestnut from two bays and not only did I get a chestnut but she was sabino to boot!! I think we were all shocked during that foaling.
