Shes nice Mariko. Nice head and nice neck that ties in high.. nice and straight too. What color are her parents. She looks to me like she could shed out to bay or even a dark buckskin color, but we need the parents color to know for sure.

Either way shes a keeper!

Thanks Debbie, her mom is completely black in the winter, but her summer coat is black with dark brown points (bleaching/ dark seal?)while the dad could be a few different colors. The mother was in a feral herd of over 100 horses. One main stallion was a dark seal, while there was also a nice light bay, and a paint and god knows what else haha. I am thinking the bay or dark seal for the father though.
I am hoping she stays the tawny buckskin/grulla color, but will be happy with anything of course!!
Thanks Jan, I know! Its ridiculous, 9 weeks and 11.2 hh already. I get shocked by her fur so much lol, it is so long and thick.

if there was a buckskin-dun in the heard you could have a grulla color quite possible. There are so many shades of it that you might have to wait. take a look at these pics this is shadow, he is the color of your baby right now out of a black stallion with dun partents and a sorrel (that we know nothing about). but he was mouse gray at birth, he has sholder shadows and ear tips with line but his tail is whats kool, it has white guard hairs a good sign of the grulla.

a few hours old

6 months
http://s256.photobucket.com/albums/hh170/newyearsbaby05/?action=view&current=DCA M0022.jpg

now a year old has a deep gray base coat with the bay/black winter coat.

is she a mustang??
this is my mustang a few months prego.

I didnt know all of the stallions unfortunately... the herd was separated before I met them, some stayed in Alberta, while some came here. So there very well could be a grulla stallion lol
I believe that she is partly Canadian. Her mother looks very canadian to me. She has a dorsal stripe, faint barring on her back legs, zebra stripes around her muzzle, and white/yellow hair coming in around her tail :-)Which I find an interesting feature. Quite a few people have said she will go black, but the white/yellow coming in at the edge of her tail makes me wonder.
Here are a couple pictures of her mom, Jewel. Starting from last summer, when she would have been around...2-3 months pregnant.

I once bred an appy mare who foaled a lineback dun...It had no spots and was the ugliest thing I'd ever seen...had tiger striping on his legs and withers, mottled skin around the eyes and mouth....and when he shedded out, he was a whole new horse! He went from light buckskin, to dark golden buckskin with a huge white blanket....and I never even thought that would be there! he changed colors COMPLETELY!

Abeo is shedding out around her eyes, muzzle and all the cuts she is getting are coming black hair now
My mom had the camera yesterday, so just general pictures, as it was farrier day, but I will grab some better shots over the long weekend!
Jewel being a good girl (only 2nd farrier visit, and she is really good!)

And my moms horse Indie, who we have had a rough time with. We started working with her in the summer at the rescue because she had such bad feet and was so untouchable/afraid, that they were going to put her down. Then we couldnt be at the rescue as much for quite awhile. She miscarried on December 23rd, and lost over 400 lbs by the 26th, and got no vet attention in that time. We were not informed until the 26th, when we rushed up there and got a vet up. He said if we were crazy enough to try to save her, he would do all he could. So the rescue gave her to my mom. Then where we had her and pregnant Jewel, we think she was mistreated while we werent there, again (her fear is a lot more than just feral, and she is very head shy). And this is her now!

Mariko..those are some pretty horses.. I am sorry your Mom's horse had to go through all that...sad when a rescue doesn't do any better than the original owners...
My situation is similar to yours...
I just took a horse in back in January that I had fostered for a while for a rescue and she was pregnant... when she went back to the rescue's farm(we had her filly and she needed to be weaned so they wanted to let the mare foal at their farm..(so they said) anyway they contacted us to let us know that the mare had miscarried..we ask to adopt her (this is about 4 months after she had gone back to them) they said we could but she had lost a lot of weight from the miscarriage...I got her back in January, from my guestimation she was about 400lbs underweight...so I started with all the good feed..etc...3 wks ago I found out she was still pregnant..1 wk ago we had a filly...

It sounds like you all are doing a great job with these horses...they are lucky to have you!! As I am sure you feel lucky to have them!! ;0)

aww awesome story Wanda. I really like this rescue, and there were circumstances that stopped them from being able to get the vet out, but I do wish they had called us earlier. They thought that another mare had miscarried, but she is still pregnant:-)
I love my girls, and am so blessed to be able to have them.

guys....please look at my new filly...what color do you think she will be? Her dam although gray is EEaa: sire is EEAa or EEaa, gray with black points and mane/tail.

I realize she may very well end up as a gray but she has no gray around her eyes yet...I clipped her back to be able to see the color when it comes in.

At birth she had grulla markings pictures are at 8 hours and 3 weeks

but is that for sure? I thought it could skip generations, for example if both sire and dam are heterozygous for gray, then its not for sure. That would only be is they were both homozygous for gray correct?
wow what a cool color terry, she is adorable. I love her lil snip!
Her skin is pretty dark, who knows she might even go black like Abeo lol! or maybe just maybe lighter to a dun/buckskin. I am just guessing though lol~
Oh, stupid question! Can a foal shed out its markings? such as blaze/ socks?

two hetero gray horses can produce a colored foal and yes gray will cover up all markings eventually....

I am wondering if this filly is colored and not gray, what color is she? I am pretty sure dun or buckskin is not possible with her....

It would be like hitting the lottery if she is black but it is possible.

Today I clipped her a little more and she is definitely mousey color

Terry- Wouldn't it be neat if your darling little girl shed out to be black? :-)

She didn't really look like she had the for sure signs of being grey. My grey mare (by a bay stallion, out of a grey mare) had a filly by a chestnut stallion, I could tell right away we had a grey on our hands, here are some pictures:

If you look really close you can see the grey rings around her eyes:

Just born:

Day after she was born:

One week old:
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h253/arabian_dreams/5-26-07344.jpg

Your filly doesn't look to have those charactoristics, is Viuda the mare that is genetically black?

S. Viuda is EEaa with gray overlay....her other two fillies were both born black and went gray but neither were this mousey color but rather pure black at birth. The first filly was by a gray stallion and the second by a black stallion. Both of these other fillies had salt and pepper coats with first shedding. I have had other gray babies that DID NOT get goggle eyes buy rather gradually got more white in their coats each year. I will color test this baby soon. T.

You guys are right! If by chance she didn't get gray from either parent, she won't be gray. I've just had the (Bad) luck of getting gray from my black and white stallion and gray and white (hetero) mares, so I wasn't thinking. Sorry!
We do have lots of black and white foals born here, but none have looked quite like that. Maybe seal bay? It's a neat color right now anyway. Keep us posted.

hi Terry, she is a beauty no matter what is her color. you may want to check this site, it has different foals with countershading (grullo like markings)and their colors after they shed. http://members.aol.com/stripedhos/sootfoal/sootfoal.htm
I think your girl looks like the third foal, doesn´t she?.
