Do you have any pictures of his dorsal stripe/leg barring? He doesn't look like the average grullo foal, he could be black with counter shading. It's just hard to tell by those photos.
Either way, he's a fancy little guy, congrats on a healthy and happy foal/mom!!

Ok well I cant get any good pics of his dorsal stripe although it is getting more visable.. The black is fadeing away.. He still has a very dominate black stripe on his belly. Here are some pics let me know what you think..

Hi,
What cute pics of the new boy. I don't know if it's the color setting on my computer or what but he sure looks like a bay to me. He has all the lighter colored leg hair that will go black and seems to have a very brownish red body color to him. I can't see any barring or such in the pics but it's hard to go by pics. Congrats!

I think he has a bay color to him as well. Its hard telling for sure though. I do not see any dun markings, I would say by those photos that the dorsal stripe you refer to , is in fact just counter shading and will fade as he gets older.

When you get pictures of him outside, in the sun, please post them. I'd be anxious to see his color then.

I think this is one that you are going to have to wait until the baby hair sheds off to make an accurate prediction. Mama appears to be gray and if he has a stripe and some barring he may very well be grullo and if the graying gene is there he might look a lot like mama, ultimately.

We have had grays over they years and sometimes they are born black/bay. (Think back to the Lippizzan stallion stories). I had one foal that I was so psyched about because I thought he was truly a black horse and POOF, he started shedding baby hair and the gray around his eyes showed up first. He literally ended up being "white" as an older horse.

P.S. CUTE baby, he has some legs!

Mary, it almost looks like he is turning black except for the graying on his legs, and I also don't see any barring or dorsal stripe. Mabey he will wind up gray and black like his mom, but I don't think he is a grulla. What did your vet say about his back legs being down on it fetlocks?

I called this morning and he said because they have gotten better since birth it was due to him sitting wierd in the uterus. They should be normal in 1-2 weeks if not he will need braces on his back legs, But the actual problem is that his tendons in his back legs are too long right now.now that I know he isnt grulla I really want him to be his mamma's color.. She would be a blue roan if it werent for her head being grey. His belly is starting to grey out I think,it is alot lighter than his body..

Mary- I'm going out on a limb here, but I think the white around his hooves is markings. I don't think he's graying out there. Usually, a foal will gray out around the eyes first, and I do not see a "ring" around his eye suggesting that. I know not all foals that turn gray are the same and he could gray out later on, but I think above his hooves is just a marking.

Also, I think he is bay. Not black. He has a lot of brown colored hair from his belly back. I think he'll be a dark bay.

Cute boy and you'll have to keep us updated on his ankles.

Lori- The white is.. you cant really see it in the pics but he has grey on his legs... I just dont know, lol. He is being confusing.I have posted a pic of his mammas papers to show what color she was let me know what you think. The photo on her papers was Lady at around 7 months old and I am told she was grullo at birth then bay and then turned grey but always had the grey above and around her white markings.

Well Mary, if he's following in his mommas footsteps, then he'll probably gray out. So, I'd say that you have a bay foal that will turn gray.
Color can be very confusing...I have dived into it over the last few years trying to learn it and sometimes it still gets me!

Mary, I had a colt foal born with his legs like your colt's. Its called hyperflexion and our colt had it severely. His hooves weren't on the ground at all, he was totally on his fetlocks. He wasn't our colt, or we would have put him down. He recovered eventually he was in the stable and had special shoes and leg braces on for the first few months of his life. The woman who owns him spent probably over ten thousand dollars on him. One of the saddest parts about this story though is she thought this was NORMAL!!

Anyway, your colt is beautiful!! I have to say bay as well though. Hope his legs get better soon.

Thank you Beth.. I dont have any yet he was a little mad at me that day cause we clipped him I will get some today or tomorrow. He will be staying a stud as of now. he has the most willing attitude for a colt I have ever seen.. if he stays willing and good tempered he will stay a stud. He definately has the blood for it. he is hollywood dun it freckles playboy hanckock poco and leo bred. I think he is looking more like hollywood that any of the others. (hoolywood is his great grandsire on his sires side) His dam looked alot like him in color. I think she is 7 months in the registartion picture and she was shedding a black coat. Time will tell
