I am planning on breeding my Paint mare next spring. She is registered as a Tobiano, Sire Tobiano, Dam Tob/Ovr. Her markings are Tobiano but she carries the blue eyes of an Overo. The stallion is an Overo, Sire Overo, Dam Appendex Quarter horse. What are my chances of a lethal white?
The only way to know for sure would be to get her tested and to find out from the stallion owner if he has been tested. Unfortunatly more Tobianos carry it then people realize. And seeing she came from a tovero there is a chance she carries olws. If she tests negative then you'll be fine but if not you will for sure want to find out about the stallion. If they are both positive and are bred together there is a 25% chance for a lethal white foal. You can get her tested through U.C. Davis or Shelterwood Labs. I don't remember the exact cost but it is somewhere between $25-$50. Good Luck in the 2008 breeding season!!
I tested my overo mare for OLWS and she was positive. The test was $50 through UC Davis. It was worth the money - most people will not test their stallions and I would never take a chance. I bred her to a homozygous Tobiano, negative OLWS stallion. To me, 25% is just too much of a gamble! JMHO
