Does anyone know what colour foal i should get if i put Molly (dark bay/brown tobiano) to a grey stallion? I asked the colour calculator and they said gray tobiano(what is a gray tobiano?) |

We would all need to know what color the stallion was before he grayed out to tell you what color you might get. Do you know what color his parents were? |

I am not sure but i think the mother was gray and the father black to dark brown...but i dont know exactly...but is gray more dominant than tobiano, will i get either coloured or gray? i cant get a chestnut can i? Funny questions but i really want another coloured tobiano, grey is also ok but if there is a chance of brown or chestnut i will take her to a coloured stallion....the gray stallion is just down the road so it would be easier!( he is also the father of grannikas baby which is chestnut...she is bay) a chestnut tobiano would also be great!! |

I am not very up on all the colour genetics, but I will have a go for you. If I am incorrect, please someone correct me, I am sure you will Firstly for a foal to be grey, fact is one of its parents have to be grey. If one of the parents is homozygous for the grey gene, 100% the foal will be grey. The grey gene has no affect on the tobiano gene they are totally separate. A grey tobiano is a horse that has white and grey colouration. It could start off looking like a bay, black or chestnut tobiano, but the colour will fade as time goes on. The grey gene is a colour modifier, not an actual colour. In short, if you want a guarantee of not getting a grey foal, do not use a grey stallion |

Lynn is correct. Unless he is homozygous for grey there would be a 50% chance of the foal turning grey. Because both parents are tobiano you have a better then 50% chance of a tobiano foal. With what you have told us about both parents here are the chances for color of the foal. This is using the color calculator. 46.88% - Gray Tobiano 27.35% - Bay Tobiano 15.62% - Chestnut Tobiano 3.91% - Black Tobiano 3.13% - Gray 1.82% - Bay 1.04% - Chestnut 0.26% - Black |

Saffron I breed my black and white tobiano mare (her sire was homozygous black tobiano) to a gray Section B Welsh stallion (bay) and got a liver chestnut colt. I have attached a picture of him an his 2nd birthday. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa170/hacooke/buzzy2.jpg I bred the mare again but this time to a black tobiano German Riding Pony and got a black colt. I have attached a picture of him. http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa170/hacooke/ARCHIE.jpg This year I breed her to a Palomino Roan Sabino Section B stallion, I'm hoping for a buckskin but only time will tell. I breed PONY HUNTERS so it doesn't really matter what color they are. If you want a guarrantee that you will get a tobiano you need to breed to a homozygous tobiano stallion. Good luck |

Here is a picture of a 2 year old grey tobiano colt of mine. As you can see the patches are starting to fade and in time he will look almost all white. He was born bay and white. In the UK the colour is often called Blue and White. His mother has the grey gene and his father is a bay tobiano. |

Can anyone tell me what color my new horse is? I have a book on horse color and it refers to sabino, tobiano, overo and splashed white as the four pinto patterns. When I see a picture of a horse that resembles her in one variation, I turn the page and see another one that's looks pretty much the same, but is a completely different variation. Then, I see some described as "tovero" and "tobino". Very confusing to me! It's not that important because I didn't buy her for her color, I was just curious. And furthermore, what's the difference between paint and pinto? Thanks so much! http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u194/black_opal_photos/ |

The difference between a Paint and a pinto is, from what I understand, that pinto refers to the color of the horse were as Paint is the breed. Paints have the coloration of pintos but only have Quarter Horse or Thoroughbred in them. These horses are registered with APHA( American Paint Horse Association). Where as The PtHA (Pinto Horse Association) has many different breeds. Hope that helped |

Jennifer splash, sabino and frame are the 3 patterns lumped together under the general term overo. If a horse has the tobiano pattern and any of the other patterns it is called tovero. Your horse looks to have tobiano, sabino, and possibly splash which would make it a tovero. |
