Hi, Im am from Argentina. Always check the board but this is my first posting.
I have a bay roan mare(her sire was bay and, I believe, the dam a chestnut roan). She is now pregnant and the sire is a bay who has produced all bays but one chestnut.
Can anyone give an educated guess on their genetics (as to the agouti and red factors) so I can improve the inputs to the Colour Calculator?. This is my first foal and I am very anxious, I love my mare and the sire is a really good horse (a german holsteiner). Thank you!!
mariana

Hi mariana, I've done extensive research on this subject and have some wonderful web sites for you to check out. 1. www.vgl.ucdavis.edu 2. horsegazette.com(click on genetics color wheel). 3. equinecolor.com. Hope this helps. charlene

mariana Your mare would be heterozygous black because she could have only received red from her dam. The sire has had a chestnut foal so he is also heterozygous black.
As far as agouti it is hard to tell. Your mare could have gotten it from her dam. It doesn't affect red so she could have had it and passed it on.
You said that the stud has had all bay and one red foal. This very well could mean he is homozygous for agouti. Do you know how many foals he has produced? I it is only a few it may just be luck of the draw if many I would quess he is homozygous agouti.

Hi Charlene and Cathy,
Thank you both!!
I checked the places you Charlene told me about and now I can understand what you Cathy are telling me. He had many foals, all bay but one, so he is probably AA right?
I used the colour calculator again with that info an I have a 44% chance of bay, 44% of a bay roan and 6% each of a chestnut and red roan, this two options I donīt really like, but like everyone else I want a healthy foal first of all.-
thank you!
