I have a dapple grey TB x Percheron mare. The sire was grey - we assume the mare was (as she was the Percheron.)
She has foaled to a coloured stallion whose mother was bay. The foal is a very nicely maked black and white. I'm wondering if it's likely to grey out? There's a pic at http://www.saddle-up.org.uk/Stables/pics/ruby.h8.jpg

Janet It looks like the foal is very dark. Most black foals are born a mousey color that darkens when they shed their baby coat. Most blacks that are going to grey are born dark, and then grey out. Look around his eyes for any grey hairs. With the sire and dam both grey even if they are both heterozygous you have a 75% chance of him greying.

Thanks Cathy - don't know Mum's status (other than that I don't like standing behind her!)
But yes, sire was coloured, by a coloured stallion out of a bay mare. He has no sign of spectacles or any grey hairs in the black - so just keeping my fingers crossed.
Won't need to guess next year - she's being AI'd on Monday to my grey stallion - so I think we can put money on a grey next year!
