Hi all

We have chestnut qh mare who is in foal to a solid paint brown/black stallion - he had a coloured parent(not sure which one) and was wondering if there is a chance to throw colour??

No, there is not a chance.

tobiano pattern has to be expressed to be there. Since the stallion in question has no paint pattern, he will never pass it on.

What do you mean by solid? Is there any white at all, like a big blaze, any socks? He could be minimally expressed and therefore could pass on some white. If he has 0 white I would say you wil get a solid foal.

Solid is a horse who maybe has white but not enough white to be registerable within the APHA.

Ya, I know that!LOL!! Minimal white QH's is how you get "crop outs" they are minimally expressed. My point is, is that this "solid stallion" can be a minimally expressed paint but not qualify for regular registry and therefore be able to produce a regular registry paint.Bald faces are usually caused by an overo gene and high white stockings can be minimal tobiano or sabino. There are other white type markings that can also be minimally expressed types of pinto genes.

I know a QH mare who has a STAR and a tiny white on a hind leg that has thrown 4 paint overo foals by a QH stallion :-).

It is always possible!
