Mare 1 is dark bay DWB. Her sire was a bright bay and dam was black. Mare 2 is a bright bay TB. Her sire was a bright bay and dam was chesnut. Both mares are in foal to a grey Andalusian stallion. Any ideas or guesses as to what I might get from these girls? Thanks! |

Without knowing the mares and stallions specific color type (hetero/homo on the agouti & greying)...that's the closest I can get. Both mares: Bay/bown Black Chestnut/sorrel... All with at least a 50% chance of the grey gene passing. When are they due? |

Thanks! The TB is due around the end of April and the DWB is due around mid-May. I will post colors when I see what I get! |

Mare 1 will carry one Agouti gene (from the bay parent) and will either be homozygous black or one black and one chestnut gene. All horses are red / black based, you can very easily tell if a horse is homozygous for red (chestnut, or I think you call it Sorrel over there) as the horse will be chestnut... Black is dominant so you can have a black based horse (looks black or bay) that also carries a red gene, you need to test for it to know unless you say have one red parent. Agouti (bay) is a black based horse that has the agouti modifier, agoutie is a modifier that only affects black, just as cream is a modifier that only affects chestnut and causes you to have buckskin or palomino. ... so anyway... mare 1 can have either black or bay as I assume to stallion would have been born black or bay, not that many chestnuts in the Andys (at least not in Australia) if the stallion only carries one copy of the grey gene the foal has a 50% chance of greying out, if he is homozygous grey then the foal WILL grey out. Mare two will be red black based, so one red gene coming from the chestnut (sorrel) parent and one black gene from the bay parent along with the agouti modifier, as chestnut is recessive, black and bay are both dominant you will probably get the same as mare one UNLESS the stallion carries red in which case you have a 50% chance of chestnut - however I would hazzard a guess and say the stallion would be homozygous black |

also forgot to say, chestnut horses can also carry Agouti, you just cant see it... you need black for it to be visible so she could actually be homozygous agouti - meaning she can only produce bay based babies, thus no black foals no matter what |
