Hi Everyone!
I have a wonderful, QYALITY, proven broodmare (Arab). She's 20, and has navicular. I brought her to Tufts when I first got her to have a work up done, and see how it should be treated. Anyway, I believe they told me it was not a genetic disease/syndrome. I would call them to confirm (and I will), but because of the holiday, I don't want to bother them with a non emergency question. We did try to breed this mare with no luck. We did all the right things (culture, biopsy, caslicks, and everything you would do for AI) We will try again in early spring. I ask if this is genetic because there is this person who is really giving me a hard time about breeding this mare. I've been given the green light by Tufts and my equine repro vet to breed this mare, but for arguments sake, am I doing a "bad" thing by breeding her? She's had 9 foals, many of whom are successful in the show ring today. So, does anyone here know for sure that this is or is not a genetic thing that will be passed on to her foals? Jos? I apologize, as this question is not directly related to breeding.
thanks in advance.

I don't think so. Navicular (IMO) is from concussion on the feet and is the deteriation of the Navicular bone. I would honestsly go for it. Just make sure that if she is bred the weight of the foal could make her more lame. But there are pain killers out there from bred mares. I have a good friend that bred a mare with Navicular and the foals are still fine and they are 10 years plus now. Good Luck.
Also IMO it is realted directly to breeding.

Navicular itself is not inherited. There are conformational faults though that predispose a horse to get it. Small feet and upright pasterns are two of these, and they are passed on from parent to get.

I have no idea whether or not you have anything to worry about with breeding your mare. Another equine bulletin board had these links posted on the heritability of navicular:
