Amanda,
I breed Appaloosas, so I think maybe I can help you a little with this question.
There are a lot of Appaloosa stallions that are very much sport horse/hunter types out there. They are 16hh or bigger. A lot of people think of Appaloosa and Appaloosa crosses as being small, rat tailed all of that stuff. But a lot of the Appaloosas today really aren't that way.
If you're not sure of the parentage of your mare, how do you know she is a QH/AppX? Just curious.

I just recently purchased an Appaloosa stud colt, to be used as my next up and coming stallion that is out of Sunbeach Honky Tonk, a 16.2hh black and white App stallion that has really excelled in the Sport horse, jumping, hunter classes.
If you're trying to get away from the Appaloosa breed, then consider breeding your mare to a Thoroughbred. I have a Thoroughbred mare that I have bred to my Appaloosa stallion and her foals have always turned out to be the sport horse/hunter/jumper type.
There are so many ways you could go with a horse that is App/QH bred. Appaloosas are a very versatile breed and can perform almost anyway you wish to train them!
If you'd like to check out some info on the Appaloosa breed, visit my website and I have some fun links on the "links page" that give some info and insight on the breed.
