Is there any way to guess whether a mare will throw a colt or filly? This will be the first foal for my mare and I'd love it to be a colt. This is just too long to wait!! |

Jackie- you need to post a photo for Jan to see, she's pretty darn good at predicting. I believe the mare needs to be about 8 months along before she can tell much though. |

It is possible to find out the sex by ultrasound at a certain point of pregnancy. I think after 50 days or so, but without checking the literature can't say for sure. |

It is possible, but I could not say how many vets actually have the expertise to sex foals and do it well. ( I believe cattle and swine are easier as my son in law who IS a vet does it frequently with their cattle operation ) My best luck with sexing foals has come from checking under the tail when they are born. |

I read that Jan wasn't going to be guessing this year. I hope I'm wrong. I would love for her to make a guess on my mare. |

If you believe in old wives tales take a nail tie it to a string & hold it over her back. If it swings back & forth it's a colt in circles a filly...Mine said colt so we'll see |

I have heard that mares carry longer with colts and that certainly is the case with my first mare to foal. Doctora went 349 days and has given us a beautiful colt....the nail test said filly...so much for guessing.... |
