HI I'm new with the Paint breed and I was wondering what HYPP and OWLS means? I have been reading up on the breed since I purchased my bred Paint mare and I have seen stallions with these postings and did not know what it means. I know it has to do with genes but that is about it.
Hi Tiffany, HYPP stands for Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis. This is a genetic disease that is traced primarily from Impressive (QH) decendents. You surely can find an excess of information on the web about it. A horse can be classified as N/N (negative), N/H (positive, 50% chance of being passed to each offspring), or H/H (Positive, with 100% chance of being passed to each offspring).
OLWS stands for Overo Lethal White Syndrome. Lethal white foals die or are euthanized shortly after birth due to multiple defects, but mostly intestinal atresia....basically, their intestinal tract is not connected at some point making it impossible for them to pass waste. To get a lethal white foal, both sire and dam would have to carry the gene. There are lots of folks on the forum who are more knowledeable regarding the OLWS and can provide more input.
Both of these conditions have genetic tests that allow to determine a horses status.
Thanks so much for the info. I don't know a whole lot about the breed and am looking into it. I also heard that a black and white stud with blue eyes can produce the lethal babies is that true? My mare is bred to a black and white but he does not have any blue eyes. Any advice on the breed is helpful and I appreciate all the help.
Tiffany, It is thought that the most common way to get a blue eye if from a overo or overo cross. It seems that the blue eye tends to be a characteristic of the overo gene. So wether the overo gene is that of the lw gene will determine if the horse could throw the lethal baby.
Also , more and more people tend to call the olws gene a lethel white gene (lw) as it is being found more and more thoughout different breeds. If it is a concern test all breeds that you are crossing with. A high white stocking qh with a large blaze (as much white that has been accepted in the qh) has been seen throwing a overo gene. You do not need to see the white on a horse for it to carry the overo gene either. You can have a solid colored horse throw a overo gene.
