I have a Friesian stallion and expect questions from mare owners regarding the heritability of the feathers and liklihood of getting his lush mane and tail. does anyone know if it is dominant/recessive, etc? thankyou! Cassandra.} |

I am not sure but we have a stallion that has a THICK LONG mane and tail and he has through that same mane and tail on every single one of his foals so far. about 19 foals. No matter what the mares mane looks like the foal always gets our studs mane. So possibly homozygous lol. I don't know if they can even be homo for the mane and tail but that sure would explane why Scotty alwasy throughs it. |

Thats a good question I would like to know too--but for my mare. I have a Percheron/Morgan cross that is preggo(just bought her) by a Paint stud she looks just like a Friesian. Has the feathers and the goreous mane and tail(now that I got all the mats and tangles out of it but I am wondering if the feathers will be passed onto the foal.... and what the chances are |

I have a Friesian/Arabian cross foal. He's a new foal but his full sibling, a filly, has some feathering and much less mane and tail as the sire. |

Ok having see breeding of the Gypsy Cross and the Friesian cross it all depends on the stallion one stallion we bred would throw feather not as heavy but give his foal some feathers. The I had a differ stallion throw no feather to his cross foals. Then I have seen two purebred gypsy that had very heavy feather bred and give the foal light feathers. Mane and tail on the other hand seems to pass alot easyer . |

Feather is COMPLETELY recessive. You must breed two horses with feather to have a fully feathered horse. Feather is considered 'feather', if it comes off the front of the leg.
Belgians, Percherons due have a small amount of feather coming of the back, but they are not considered a feathered horse. Shire, Clydesdale, Gypsy, Drum, Fell pony and to some extent Friesians are the only horses considered feathered breeds. Hope this helps. |

I have a Friesian stud as well and he comes from a line that is not known for their thick hair. It really depends on what line your boy comes from as to how much hair he is going to pass on. What is your boy's breeding? Would love to see some pics of him. |

Hey I posted on this one that long ago and was interested in the responses. And yep my foal did not get any feathering..
have a Clydesdale bred to a Clydesdale now and yep I will get feathers |
