I agree, he's definitely buckskin. I think when the fluff sheds off, we see more of the dark pigmented skin thru the fine new hairs and it distorts their true golden color. My buckskin just went thru a similar shed....very lite to start, shed out to look 'grey'...but it was only the dark skin under the very short new coat. The coat grew in and seems more golden now.
Tansy, my buckskin colt is the same way, his summer coat was beautifully golden, then the winter coat came in a bit blackish, looks like yours shedded coat! cute baby!
I was just asked a question by a friend, she asked if a buckskin can have white socks and white hairs in the mane and tail. I said I didn't think so, but I only breed solid colors (boring, I know)so I would ask here to get the right answer. Please let me know. Thanks everyone!
