Hey everyone! My 6 month stud colt is a really super duper light palomino and was born with blue eyes that are slowly turning dark. He is almost white and his tale has a little red in it (it may be from the dirt) he was going gold for a while but now he has more fluffy hair and is almost white with gold legs. Is he just a palomino or a cremello palomino? His moms a red dun and his dads a Cremello |

He's probably just a light palomino. In order to be cremello he would have had to have both parent's carrying the cream gene. I'm not sure exactly how the dun gene plays in; that might contribute to his lighter color as well. Do you have any pictures of him we could see I'm curious? |

Well actually a dun mare could carry a creme gene. I never thought that but it is possible. My vet has a Grulla mare she bred to her buckskin stallion and they produced a perlino colt. If the colt does have blue eyes, and pink skin it is a cremello. however it could be a palomino with dun factor that would give the darker legs and mane and tail. If you have pictures of it post them. Perlinos and Cremellos have pink skin and blue eyes, if one is missing it is not a double dilute.
One way you could tell if your mare could carry the creme gene is what was the color of her parents? If neither parents carried the creme gene than you have a palomino/dun.

Wow! I never knew that; I knew how the cream gene worked but not that dun could carry cream too. I wonder what that would look like? Does the dun gene hide the cream or does it affect the color as well? Fascinating stuff! |

I am not real sure, I just know that they had a grulla mare, looked like a normal grulla, and they never knew she carried the creme gene until she had a Perlino colt. So since the grulla mare is a black horse with the dun gene, I guess the dun does hide the cream gene. I would love to see some other mares that are known carriers of the creme gene but are duns. |

Actually it is the black that hides the cream gene. A smokey black (black with cream) can look exactly like a black horse with no cream. Some can look smokey colored. |

here are two pictures of our dunolino colt, he is dna'd and carry's the creme gene-mom is a grullo and dad is a buckskin, we also have a filly that isby two dun parents that is a dunskin- dna'd to carry creme- looks just like a dun, if you want to see pics of her she is on our website on the mare page under Little Uptown Foline.www.brassfieldranch.com

Tansy- nice colt! will you keep him? The dunskin filly you spoke of, did one of her parents have a palomino or buckskin lineage? (still working mentally on putting the genetic pieces together on this color puzzle thing) |
