Which ones are NOT important? What price range would be acceptable? What are your customer support preferences? How much time do you expect to spend on record keeping per day (without computer/with computer)? Would you like to have a portable and convenient way to enter data when away from the computer? Now that we have got them up and running they work well for us, but it took quite a while to get all the information that we wanted fields for sorted out - and we still add to them sometimes! We use PDA's in the field and have Data On The Run on those that allow entry of data on the PDA, and then update to the mainframe computer at the end of the day. Very convenient! We are somewhat different from many average breeders in that we require fields for ultrasound results etc. in our mare database - more of a vet oriented database - and we record stallion data related to semen freezing, which the average farm would not require. It sure beats the folders full of paper that we had to rely on in the past though!!!
