Well today we bred a mare via AI with a shipment of semen that was delivered over night.
The motility was about 30%. We have never had an sperm sample so low before.

Mare is in good healthy. Gets pregnant every year. Follicle size 43. Gave the vaccination to ovulate.

What do you think the chances are?
All the sperm looked normal but only 30% were mobile.

Next time (if the mare does not catch) we shall fly the semen up for same day service no matter if it is an inconvience for the stallion service station. (that is why went over night this time).

I would say it all depends on how many million per ml the semen had. 30% isn't bad if you have a good quantity of semen. Expecially if they shipped over 1 billion like they are suppose to (they estimate a 50% die of rate when caculating)..
hope-

I am not sure what the quality was. It is like pulling teeth to get some straight answeres. (or maybe I am not asking the questions properly). I know they are suppose to ship over the billion. They sent us two doses and we put both in the mare. The amount of doses was large but it is hard to say the quality.

Oh well it is done. I will Ultra sound her again in 14 days and go from there. Just is frustrating to have happen when were told the lowest he every shipped was 50% motility when it arrives.

I think I will call and ask about the quality and the 1 billion. If it is that good then I have less to worry on.

We bred a mare once on a 10% motility --- the second time this breeder sent us such poor quality semen. I raged!" I might as well wave David Copperfield's wand over her!" BUT...17 days later --- you guessed it, ...pregnant. I never used that breeder again, though.

That is the way we are feeling. We shall not breed to that stallion again.

Mare is still in foal and lookong good.

Percentage progressive motility of sperm means little or nothing with respect to potential viability of the insemination dose!

The number of progressively motile sperm in the insemination dose is what counts!

An insemination dose should contain between 100-500 million progressively motile, morphologically normal sperm in order to have a good pregnancy rate (assuming close proximity of ovulation to the time of insemination). That means that if one is sent 1 billion sperm (which is a standard number to be shipped) that have 10% progressive motility/normal morphology then one still has a perfectly viable insemination dose of 100 million PMMNS!.

So don't panic too soon with low motility - only panic if you have low progressively motile, morphologically normal sperm numbers!!!
