With so many variables, many of them mare/mare owner dependent and shipping related, how can you accurately state a stallion's conception rate with transported, cooled, shipped semen?

It's no problem to determine the stallion's conception rate, but it is important that the correct intrepretation is placed on the statistic!

In our courses we recommend that one wants to see the following minimum first cycle conception rates:
  • On-farm AI: 65%
  • Live cover: 60%
  • Transported cooled semen: 55%
  • Frozen semen: 45%
Obviously a sufficient number of mares needs to be in the statistical base as well, but if figures lower than these are encountered, it may indicate a problem at the stallion/semen/shipping end of things that should be investigated more closely before booking to the stallion.

It should be noted that although there may be problems related to transport or breeding that are out of the stallion owners control, some of the factors that may at first sight appear to be out of their control may not necessarily need be so:
  • Does the stallion owner discuss suitability of mare before accepting bookings or do they just accept all-comers?
  • Is there a requirement in the contract for a "clean" uterine swab culture and cytology before shipping semen?
  • Does the stallion owner have all required shipping statuses for airline shipments?
  • Does the stallion owner do footwork to make sure that courier shipments will be sent to locations correctly for a timely delivery?
There are of course other similar factors that can also make a difference, I merely use the above as an example of some.

If first-cycle pregnancy rates are lower than the above figures, it is well worth asking pertinent questions of other breeders that have bred to the stallion!
