I am hoping someone can answer my question. Yesterday we shipped semen to two mare owners, semen due to arrive and be used today. Oddly both mare owners believe their mare's ovualted sometime last night. One mare is confirmed to have ovulated sometime last evening. The other I'll know more later...but Mare owner seems to be only speculating.

Anyhow, both mare owners chose to go ahead and inseminate post ovulation hoping to catch the mares on this cycle. Anyone have any thoughts or information on what our chances are?

Both mare owners were 'last minute' requests, and we believe we shipped very good semen to both. I as the stallion owner would like nothing more than to settle both mares.

thank you, Lisa

Lisa,
This happened to me last season, the stallion owner only ships on MWF; we needed it on Sunday, and the mare ovulated before insemination and she didn't get in foal so we had to order again on the next cycle. Hopefully, it wasn't too late....but their chances are not the best. Good Luck. -Ivy

I have actually had some luck with post ovulation breeding, if you breed close enough to ovulation. Has to be within 4 to 6 hours of ovulation. We have had a few studs we have bred to where ther sperm has a very short life span so with those you almost have to hit your mare right on or right after ovulation to get in foal.

Lisa,

Well at least it was worth a shot. I know last year on my mare's firt AI cycle she ovulated sometime between 5pm the night we ultrasounded her and we next day aired semen and bred the next day at 3. My vet's feeling was that the "goods" were here so why waste it. I hope you bet the odds and both mares settle.

All my mares for the past 3 years have been ovuplanted (not sure of the spelling), which basically means inseminated after ovulation and I have had a 100% pregnancy rate with both fresh, chilled and frozen semen, but there is only a 6 hour window so they were scanned every 6 hours prior to insemination. Yesterday one of my mares was scanned and was actually ovulating as they were scanning her, now thats what I call timing
