Stallion owner says shipments were fine leaving the farm. My mare is ovulating within 24 h after insemination - not a maiden or problem mare. Semen has been documented consistently 10% motility and with lots of extra unidentifiable stuff in it by my vet a well known repo specialist in my area. Semen came in an Equitainer I, 1 day delivery and inseminated same day. This is the first time I have dealt with getting poor semen. This is getting expensive and wasting my mare's cycles on a non-performer. All other stallions I have used have excellent quality. What are a mare owners options? What to say to the owner? I don't think the stallion ships well. |

Your options are really restricted by what your breeding contract says. If the contract guarantees "good quality semen" or some similar wording, then you may have recourse. If it doesn't mention anything about quality control, your recourse may be limited. Will your veterinarian contact the stallion farm? That would be a good place to start. If your veterinarian (rather than you) contacts them and makes some scientifically based observations about the quality, then perhaps that may make a difference. Before doing that though, make sure that everything is right in your camp! Is the semen being evaluated properly (I'm not saying it isn't in your case, but I have seen many instances where veterinarians are not evaluating cooled shipments correctly, so best to make sure). Look at the article on evaluating semen with a home made slide-warmer for more information on that. |

Have had a similar experience with a stallion last season. Tried 5 times to settle a mare, and my vet was saying his semen was low quality all around. Contract said that the stallion owner is not to be held liable if the mare does not settle, but there is some other wording that made the stallion owner accountable. You can email me for more info...I consulted legal council on my contract, might have some info for you. |

Thanks Jos and Gwen :-) I looked at the contract and it does say I can switch if the stallion is not fertile. My vet has a slide warmer and we were breeding more than one mare that day with more than one shipment from a different farm. The other boy's stuff was just about jumping off the slide. This poor boys stuff looked like it was slowly crawling off to die - what there was of it. |

I've had the same problem with the stallion I have been using this year. Both times I tried the sperm has arrived at 10% - they only did counter-to-counter (on an airplane) so it really got here fast. I've contacted the owner, but she is still saying his sperm is good. It's very frustrating! |

I have a question about chargeing for shipments. I am new to this ship semen thing and don't really now the protcal does anyone have a Option This is the story. 1st shipment came in with no swimmers short cycled mare. 2nd shipment came in between 20 & 25%. Stallion owner(husband) called me the night of shipment to tell me it was only @ 30% & thought it had something to do with the extender that was used. Said if I could get Sat delivery he would collect again and take it to his vet to ship, (they had shipped 1st two from their farm) It came in around 60% and looked good. Problem was mare had ovulated somewhere after the 1st shipment and before the 2nd. Wife emailed me to say she wouldn’t charge me for the very 1st shipment(all dead) but needs $250 for the 20/25% shipment and $300 for Sat delivery. Am I wrong to think that it wasn’t my problem someone on their end messed up the 1st two shipments. I don’t feel I should be responsible for them. On top of my vet bill probably being more than it needed to be. I don’t have a problem paying $300. Am I wrong? Oh yea Mare open on 16 day ck |

They have done the right thing in not charging you for the first (dead) shipment. You need to look at this article on our site to decide if the subsequent shipments were indeed potentially not viable. It's not about percentage motility! It's about the number of progressively motile, morphologically normal sperm that were available to be inseminated! |
