I read in the April 2007 issue of The Horse, p. 24, that research indicates Pre Seed lubricant has the least negative impact on cooled semen & Minilube has the second least negative impact The brands Equilbue, Priority Care show significantly faster rate in motility after 24 hours. How concerned should I be about using the usual equine non spermicidal lubricants? Should I try to find the Pre Seed & Minilube products. Thanks for sharing any insight.
Research out of the University of PA (New Bolton) published in 2002 indicated that non-water-soluble AV lubricants were best, as they did not dissolve into the seminal plasma and upset osmotic pressures. This research has also been backed up by others. We have used plain and simple mineral oil for years as our AV lubricant - it doesn't take much, and does not dissolve into the seminal plasma. The only catch is that one has to use plastic disposable liners in the AV - but then one should be doing that anyway for sterility and convenience purposes (the latex of the AV will break down if one doesn't use a plastic liner but uses mineral oil).
With many stallions the lubricant won't make any significant difference, but if one is collecting a lot of different stallions each year (as we do) or have a stallion that it does make a difference for, the difference can be quite profound (read "dead sperm" ).
Jos- Just confirming from your post, mineral oil will not affect the motility or sperm count in any way? I understand about the liner requirement. I have always used priority care lube but this will be a great savings in cost. Thanks for the response.
Mineral oil is essentially inert. It's osmolarity is different from the semen, but it will float to he top of the ejaculate, so as it doesn't mix in the difference in the osmolarity doesn't affect the sperm (except perhaps for the few immediately adjacent to it when at the top, but that will be a negligible number).
So in our (and others) opinion, the use of an inert product such as mineral oil is superior to the water-soluble lubricants. And we like the price as well!
Does anyone know if Pre~SeedEQ is the same as their product for humans?
