Fed Ex dropped the ball...or in this case the Equitainer. Doc was out and found a 55 follicle ready and waiting day five. The shipment was to come shortly after he was here. Plane couldn't fly from Burbank. It will be here tomorrow. Unfortunately, Doc, meaning well...hcg'd the mare anticipating that fed ex would be pulling into the yard shortly after he left, today. Any point in putting this more-than-forty-eight-hour old sperm in this mare tomorrow?

Might as well, its there right? I would however tell the stallion farm about Fed Ex and that way they won't charge you but charge Fed Ex.

Marie....
Bummer...but, you may not be out of the woods.
See if they kept a sample of the semen at the stallion farm/station. Occasionally, they will keep a sample for testing purposes and follow how the stallion ships. They may be able to tell you at what interval you are sunk.

Best of luck :-)

The HCG don't make the Mare ovulate until about 36-48 hours later. So you still may be able to catch the window AFTER she ovulates and still get her in foal. I would give her the Semen.. It couldn't hurt!:-)

Probably too late now, but if you face the situation again, a single dose of P&E may delay the ovulation by 24 hours if you're lucky. Other alternatives are double-dose Regumate, or ECP, but we've had the best success with the P&E.

I probably wouldn't have hCG'd on a 55 follicle unless I had the semen in my hand... :-) :-(

Thank you all. I literally went out and found the Fed Ex driver this A.M. and took the container home. Before I left, I was so determined, I told my barn manager to wash the mare and put her in the stocks! (The worst kind of cock-eyed optimist!)

So much for "we're sorry, we'll get it to you cartage at two in the A.M. if we have to" Mare was: cervix open, standing heat, "on the floor"(?).
Took sample to Doc. He warmed it briefly and ... Vigorous swimmers, going across the slide straight at a good clip! He says wierder things have happened. It's hours later and Rosie is still standing straddle-legged with her butt to the old stud across the fence. Hope's flame flickers...THANK YOU ALL. Jos...believe me, I ever-so-gently made that point to Doc today. He took it well. He really was just trying to optimize my chances and this has never happened before.
