Does anyone know the requirements to ship semen from the US to Canada?
I've just started researching since we may be booking a couple of mares from Canada this year.
Any quartentine requirements? How to ship, Airline? Fedex something else? Anyone have contact info for whatever agencies I would need to contact to get the requirements?
Thanks!

No restrictions. Open border. The only problem would be if there were a health risk in the US such as the vesicular stomatitis that occured a few years ago, then CFIA may impose restrictions, but right now there are none.

Do be aware though that the value of the shipment (stud fee) will be subject to GST upon importation to Canada, and that you will also have to send commercial invoices with it in order for Canada Customs to be able to clear it.

Hello Jos:

What about shipping to US from Canada? I have a shipment to go to Texas. I understood it was an open border and you just shipped it off but someone mentioned that a negative Coggins was needed. Are there forms I need to fill in and include besides the normal ones?

There is no Coggins Test or other health requirement needed for shipping from Canada to US. I have checked with US customs and Dept of Agriculture about this. They do advise calling ahead to the customs entry port to advise the shipment is coming through to advoid delays. There may be some advantage to using a broker as well.

Shipping cooled semen Canada to USA. Can you send it Fed-Ex from a local depot? Can you just put it on an American bound flight from Pearson? Thanks

I am new to this whole semen shipping thing. I live near Ottawa Ontario Canada and am looking at several studs in Florida and California. How do they ship and what kind of shelf life does the semen have? Does it come frozen? How do they keep it frozen? How viable would it be coming such a long distance? ANy forms necessary at the Canadian Border for this to go through? I recently purchased a homozygous tobiano mare from PA and had a whole lot of hoops to jump through to get her here.. can I expect the same with a semen shipment?

FedEx can ship overnight to much of the USA. Check with them for details from your area.

WRT to counter-to-counter by air, you must have "known shipper status" in order to ship in that manner. Contact the airline you are looking at using for details.

Debbie:

There should not have been any great number of hoops to jump through for importation of a mare from the US to Canada. Current negative Coggins, International health papers, and a commercial Customs invoice are all that are required, and then you must pay GST at the point of importation. It's become much easier than it used to be as there is no health inspection necessary by an Ag. Can. veterinarian unless there is a possible health or paperwork issue with regards to the horse (as determined by Canada Customs).

I would suggest a "first things first" program here, and would encourage you to contact your veterinarian who will be doing the inseminations to determine their level of experience (note that not all vets are comfortable with either frozen or cooled semen); and then contact various stallion owners and ask the individual questions of them.

Communication is the key to success. Do your footwork before you make any commitments.
Many of the questions you ask about shipping semen have variable answers and will depend upon the individual stallion you are looking at. For example, frozen semen may be available from some stallions, whereas others will ship only cooled semen (cooled is more common than frozen). The degree of viability of cooled semen will vary from stallion to stallion. Some may be good for 72 hours after collection, others only 48 hours (or less). The only paperwork that will be required for importation at the border will be a commercial Customs Invoice. You will have to pay GST on the semen at the point of importation.

Hi Jos;

Thanks for the info. You are right about the requirements from US to Canada. We are in the middle of finding a USDA registered Vet to do all the required paperwork, and since this mare is unproven, I also want her ultrasounded and pregnancy checked for viability. Its alot of money to spend for a horse if all you can do is look at her should she not be able to conceive. The mare is only about 6 hours from me, just across the PA border. I have spoken to Dr Brown, is Harrisburg PA who also confirmed the requirements. The hardest part was finding the USDA registered vet since this mare is in "the boonies" and nobody seemed to be both USDA registered and have the required ultrasound equipment as well. :P... anyway, that is all straightened out now and the vet is booked for Oct. 29th. I understand that once this material is dated, it is all sent to USDA in Harrisburg for co-signing by Dr. Brown, then sent back to the mare's ranch, and we then have 30 days to get her over the border into Canada. We only live about 1 hour or so from the border at 1000 islands, and about 6 hours from the mare's home in PA. I expect to have the mare up at our farm in Ottawa Ontario Canada by the end of NOvember.

Next, I have been looking at possible stallions to breed to for 2005. I have one possibility in a world champ stallion in Florida, and another champion in Colorado. I have contacted both stallion owners and exchanged a few emails going over the basics.

I am not sure however, of the practicality of shipping from such a distance and the expense of world champion horse semen, adding exchange and also pst and gst at the border. I have not yet spoken to my vet regarding inseminations and experience levels as I am trying to get as much information as I can first.

This would be my first AI and I am learning just what this whole procedure entails while also looking for a similarly comparable horse in Canada, which would save me the exchange and taxes and border hastles.

Questions: How many inseminations do you get from one equitainer?

How do you time these inseminations if the horse doesnt show any heat cycles ... our farm has only mares...

Has anyone used the counter to counter option of airlines to ship semen from US to Canada?

Deb.

Jos:

Please define a commercial customs invoice? Is this just a bill of sale?

It is essentially a regular invoice, but if you search the Internet you will find that some of the Customs brokers provide an invoice in a suitable format for Customs. I would recommend that such an invoice be used to avoid complications at the border as a result of a lack of complete information.
