I will be needing semen for my mare in 2 days from a Stallion in the USA. My concern is this Stallion has not been collected yet this year. Will this cause a low sperm count etc.? Should I wait for my mare's next heat in hopes that he will have been collected at least a few times before I request the next shipment of semen?
Michelle that would depend entirely on the farm handling the stallion. Most well managed breeding facilities who stand stallions. Will collect and evaluate the stallion´s sperm just prior to the start of breeding season, anyway. So in effect that stallion will have been cleaned out so to speak. However in truth the overall quality of a healthy stallion´s semen will not be substantially different on the first collection of the season. If the farm doing the processing of the semen does things correctly the dose or doses sent to you should contain ~1 billion progressively motile sperm, regardless of when it was collected. So I guess what I´m saying is that it should not matter that the horse has not been collected yet. So long as the ones collecting do their part correctly.
