Maiden Mare Not Reading The Book!

Postby Fairhaven » Thu May 03, 2018 10:17 am

I have a Maiden TB Mare who was allegedly attempted to be bred via LC in 2017 but refused to accept/tease the stallion. The Stallion's book closed June 15 so she was not bred. Fast forward to this year, I have acquired her and intend to breed her with Fresh Cooled via AI.

I brought her into the Vet on March 27 and we determined she was still transitional based on her 'football team' of follicles. We live in North Western Canada so it's not a huge surprise, but we were hoping to get lucky. Regardless, everything internal looked good and suitable to breeding. We decided to wait for her next cycle and hoped she would ovulate/cycle as per usual... we continually scanned and monitored her. We witnessed one 'good' ovulation and a CL and on April 20th we Lutalysed her, however she responded 'weirdly' in the words of my Repro vet, as when we checked her April 23rd and she had already ovulated and had a follicle developing which was sitting at 4.2cm, but almost no edema. We checked her again 2 days later and the follicle had grown to about 4.5/4.6cm and she had much more edema. We ordered semen and inseminated her on the 27th, along with a shot of Chorulon.

The Vet checked her again on the 28th and she hadn't Ovulated yet, so we checked her again on the 30th and still, no ovulation.. By now we've assumed she won't be ovulating and it was essentially a waste of semen, but such is life. Fast forward, we scanned her again yesterday (May 2nd) to see where she was at, and the follicle is still just sitting there but has regressed a little to around 4.2 if I remember correctly...

We have decided to send her home and put her on Regumate followed by another shot of Lutalyse on May 19th and I will take her back into the vet on May 22 to see where we're at....

Is there anything we're missing? Anything else we can be doing? Is she just being finicky or should I be worried about anything? Is it possible it wasn't a CL we lutalysed on and we just messed stuff up?
