hemorrhagic follicle/regumate question

Postby jasminejonz » Wed Jul 12, 2017 1:51 pm

Hi - As I am new to this forum, I am not sure this is the correct place to post this question/problem, but here goes. We have a 15 year old Connemara mare who is having cycle related issues. In January 2016 she had a prolonged transitional heat, during which she was very irritable (she is generally never mareish or attitudinal in or out of heat), with lots of winking, squatting, peeing. Ultrasound showed enlarged follicle on R ovary. We ran a granulosa cell tumor panel and all was normal, so we started her on regumate, which stopped her symptoms. She remained on regumate through April 2016, and then cycled all of last spring/summer/fall with no further problems. On May 31, 2017 she had an episode of cycle related colic. Ultrasound showed very large follicle (42mm) again on R ovary. Treated her for pain, but she kept showing heat (winking, peeing, squatting constantly), so we re-ultrasounded on 6/13. She did not appear to be in heat upon physical exam (cervix closed), and pictures showed 40mm follicle in same spot as before on R ovary, so though was that it had become anovulatory. At that point it did not appear hemorrhagic. Ran cytology, culture, and repeat granulosa panel, all normal. Progesterone was 9.1 which confirmed not being in heat despite showing it. Throughout this time she has been difficult to ride, clearly sore tracking left, presumably because of R ovary being painful/enlarged. After test results came back, tried a shot of lutalyse to move the anovulatory follicle along, and re-ultrasounded 5 days later, on 7/3. That exam showed follicle in same position, but now appears to be hemorrhagic, with a second follicle developing, again on R ovary. Started her on regumate that day, so it has now been 10 days, but unfortunately, she is still showing heat quite heavily. At this point we are completely perplexed as to what to do next, so turning to this forum for help!!!
