20+ mare in foal

Postby wolfwoman » Fri Oct 09, 2015 9:37 am

2 weeks ago we rescued a 20+ yr old mare from a kill pen. She is underweight and we had her checked for pregnancy. She is in foal and entering her last trimester. I am feeding her senior food and adding a broodmare supplement. Is this the right thing for her or should I be feeding her a mare & foal grain. She has free access to hay. Thanks for any advice.

The base of a horse's diet is forage - grass and/or hay. In order to determine whether one is providing adequate nutrition, one therefore should have the forage analysed. Grains and mixed feeds are essentially supplements which balance out the forages. Once one has the base analysis sorted out, then one can answer your question as to whether what you are feeding is "the right thing"! :)
