From Collection to Frozen

Postby Ashenvale » Wed Jan 09, 2013 5:06 pm

Hi All,

I wonder if someone can help. I have recently trained Chilled and fresh collection.

I have a client round the corner who would like to collect and freeze some semen from his stallion, we have discussed this in length and he would like to store his semen with an AI bank several hours away. They have a very good reputation and I have seen their facilities and feel this would be a good centre for him.

He is very tight on the budget as are most people currently. What can we do at home to prepare the stallion in order to cut down costs at the centre. Other than dummy training, is there an option of me being able to collect and chill from this stallion and then send to the centre to freeze?

I didnt cover the frozen method on my training, therefore its not something i am incredibly knowledgable off.

thank you in advance.

We offer a freezing service for transported semen, so yes, it can be done. It is not typically going to yield as good results as if the semen is collected and frozen immediately. Results will be better if the semen is collected and centrifuged, then resuspended in a suitable extender after removal of seminal plasma prior to shipping, but most farms do not have the equipment or knowledge necessary to achieve that.

Incidentally, I will probably be over in Hertfordshire in February (I am from there) if you want to try and get a little more insight on the way to do it... You can contact me through the mail link to the right. :)
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!

I have collected semen to be shipped away for freezing with no issues at all and extended at 1:2, 2 parts (34ml) INRA96 and 1 part (17ml) raw semen. It's chilled as per normal and taken immediately to the freezing centre which is a 3 hour drive from my place. As Jos has mentioned in other posts, nothing is absolute and there will be variance betweens stallions.
