Mare at term breaking wind

Postby Chris » Thu Dec 26, 2013 1:35 pm

Merry Christmas everyone

I have a maiden mare inside her due date range at 333 days post LSD..I allow a 10 day range of 330-340 days.

Its now 0730 and most of last night while lying down sleeping she was farting a lot as well as setting the alarm off numerous times. All her physiological changes pre-parturition are normal but the farting was fairly constant each time I went to check on her. Gut sounds were normal, resp rate was elevated. First time I've ever seen this "wind" problem.

As she walks around the yard she has left the normally expected amount of loose stools.

Am I being overly concerned? :?:

Probably! :)

If she's comfortable otherwise, no signs of colic etc., then likely nothing to worry about. The loosening of the stool may be suggestive of heading towards parturition, but is hardly a definitive indication. Any changes in diet or weather patterns lately? The relevance of the former is obvious, the latter may produce increased water consumption leading to loosened manure.

As ever - if there are still ongoing concerns, then have your vet evaluate her!
