Jos- How to collect and freeze colostrum?

Postby oakleaf218 » Mon Apr 22, 2013 9:24 am

Hi Jos,

In preparing for my placentitis mare's foaling, I would like to collect some colostrum from my other mares, so I have a few questions about how this is properly done:

1. How much colostrum can I safely take from my mare without depriving her newborn foal of its colostrum?

2. How to store and freeze -- do I need a 60 ml sterile syringe, or can I freeze it in a baby bottle? Should it be double wrapped, in freezer paper, perhaps?

3. How many hours post-foaling will my mare have colostrum available for me to harvest?

4. Any special instructions for thawing and using the colostrum I have stored? How long will it keep in my freezer?

5. Lastly, how can I tell if my placentitis mare has colostrum or not? Her udder is absolutely huge at this point.

Thank you very much for your guidance. My placentitis mare has 10 more days to go until she is inside the 30 day window for foaling. I am planning to stop the regumate on her at day 311, by the way. Do you concur with this? Do you like to taper off the regumate or just stop 'cold turkey'?

Kindest Regards,

Autumn

There is some good information available at the National Colostrum Network website, which I think will answer all your questions. If not, please feel free to repost the specific one(s) missed!
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!
