Day of Embryo Flush

Postby TAC » Mon May 09, 2016 2:43 pm

I have a mare that we routinely had early 14 day pregnancies and then would lose the pregnancy. We sent the mare for embryo transfers thinking she would be a slam dunk. This mare has not flushed any embryos; however one breeding they were unable to flush her and she had a pregnancy and carried full term. My question is- could it be possible that this mare's embryos are too small for them to see on the normal flushing days?

It is unlikely that the embryo was too small, but that there was a failure to harvest it. It is possible however that it was harvested but not identified in the search dish.

The embryo does not descend into the uterus until 5½ days after fertilisation, so in the case of flushing for vitrification (which occurs on day 6) they are sometimes legitimately missed. Otherwise it's a matter of failed harvest (presuming there is an embryo present).
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!
