Mare showing Heat while on regumate?

Postby nwind2 » Sat Aug 02, 2014 8:13 pm

We have tried 3 times last fall to get this mare in foal. Her last foal was 2 years ago, had always been a mare that took on first try till know. Cytology was done last year and was clean.
We bred her in May, confirmed not in foal. We bred her July 18, used oxytocin protocal and after ovulation waited 3 days and put her on regumate. She is showing strong heat today, while being on regumate. Planned on doing a ultrasound this week. Now what?

It would be unusual for a mare to actually display estrus while being treated with an adequate level of progestin, although they may continue to cycle - develop and ovulate follicles. It is possible that the mare is displaying submissive behaviour, but without ultrasound you will not know for sure. Alternatively, it may be that the Regumate has been compromised - heated, expred etc and the progestin levels are not adequately elevated to suppress display.

As far as what to do with the mare... probably go back to the beginning. The fact that there has been a year's delay since the prior evaluation is probably something to consider - "bugs" can creep a lot in that time period!! You might also consider a biopsy and culture rather than culture and cytology as it will give you some additional information.
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!

It is a fresh bottle, just got it from the Vet.
Will ultrasound her on Wed. and see what is going on and do a biopsy and culture..
