0 for 2 full term, want to try again...

Postby Gallop136 » Thu Nov 03, 2016 10:57 am

TB Mare, 2 pregnancies both premature, one small but healthy (before me), lost the other one.(60 days early, first with me, healthy but premie, legs not developed, had to put down)
Poor perineal conformation and wind sucks. Caslicks came out early last year, not replaced (lesson learned) Always had easy breeders, so learned the hard way that it's not always straightforward...
Suspect placentitis but nothing was checked (I was away, vet didn't check)
Will try one more time this upcoming season (TB, will be under lights)
Will do blood tests to make sure there's nothing brewing (no outward signs of any disease)
Will make sure vaccinations are all up to date. (have been in the past)
Caught easily last time w/hot shot, but will do C+C at minimum.
Caslicks for sure, but what else can I do as preventative?
Was not taking daily temps, so will likely do that, especially 90 days out.
Anything else I can do to see if I can get her to full term? Cleaning, antibiotics, frequent inspections/monitoring?
Thanks.

We have an article on the website about first steps when breeding a mare (follow that link). Although you have bred them before, you will probably get some assistance from the article. When one encounters problems, it's often best to go back to stage one and start a process of elimination... :) I would pay particular attention to the possibility of performing an endometrial biopsy and evaluating the results. If your mares have a poor endometrial condition, depending upon the causes there may be little one can do to improve the likelihood of getting a live foal.
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!
:)
