Insulin syringes

Postby Cindy » Wed Jul 18, 2012 4:00 pm

His Jos, you mention using Insulin syringes for your oxytocin protocol, are these with the 1/2" long needles? Just wondering if the 1/2" long needles get deep enough in the muscle or if there is a longer one you use? Thanks!

Yes, the human insulin syringes that have a ½" needle (usually 26 gauge or so). Note that we use these only for drugs such as oxytocin or PGF2α which are very small molecules which will dissipate very quickly through the system even if it is given subcutaneously (in fact Lutalyse in Canada is labelled for use only SC, not IM as it is in the USA, even though it is the same product!). It would not be suitable for something such as biorelease histrelin or the like. You can use them to give IV shots as well (again, only with a "thin" liquid such as oxytocin or hCG).

There is one word of caution - as the needles are very fine, in the event that the horse makes a major jump when being doses there is a (very unlikely) possibility of the needle breaking. In the thousands of shots that I have seen given or given myself, I have only seen it happen once, but that possibility does therefore exist.
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!

Thanks Jos! Yes, I did notice they were quite "fragile" as I broke one drawing it out of the bottle one time when the bottle slipped. On a good note I have given a few of the shots now and they tend not to react which is really nice but I will definitely be careful! I only use the needles for oxytocin but good not know about the other drugs.
I also found out about the Lutalyse when I argued with someone from the states that is was SC only, they had been giving it IM for years. Later found out you could and I had always been so careful to do it just SC, lol.
