On Tuesday 05/21/2013, our American Mammoth Jackstock jennet foaled twin jacks! They are healthy and close to the same size. We have named the darker foal Jarah (Hebrew for "gives sweetness) and the lighter foal is Shiloh (Hebrew for "Gift from God". We hope to bring them and Daisy (their mother) home tomorrow. The twins are the hit of Tennessee Equine Hospital, where we had taken Daisy to foal. We hope to bring the twins and Daisy home tomorrow.

The twins are now 5 months old and we are weaning them from pail feeding. Daisy rejected them and the vets at TEH could not get her to accept them. Both are healthy and growing. They are small for Mammoths, but I guess that is not unexpected with twins.

Gosh, not much of anyone must be visiting these boards anymore. How are your two little donkeys? That's very cool! Is successful twinning more common in donkeys than horses? Did you know beforehand your jennet was twinning? How much intervention was required to get them healthy? See, I'm full of questions.

Sorry for the delay in answering. Been VERY busy. Twins are slightly more common in donkeys and have a better chance of a positive outcome. Still, healthy same size twins are exceedingly rare even in donkeys. Mom rejected them, so we pan fed them their milk replacer. They are always together and do everything together - eat, drink, sleep, etc. They are healthy and happy boys, soon to be gelded.

To answer your questions, we did not know she was having twins, despite at least 6 ultrasounds at our local vet and
Tennessee Equine Hospital, where she foaled. The second foal was a red bag delivery, so he needed and got help. Other than that, they needed no extra care - just bottle/pan feeding. We are extremely fortunate.
