Aborted Foal-question for Jos

Sometimes the pregnancy doesn't go as expected and the foal is lost. Here you can share information and perhaps learn why it happened and/or how to prevent a reocurrence.

Aborted Foal-question for Jos

Postby bbpaint » Tue Mar 04, 2014 1:14 pm

Hi Jos. My mare aborted last night due to placentitis, was on antibiotics and regumate. My question is, should the mare be flushed out. My vet told me to just give her a shot of oxytocin and continue her on the antibiotics for another 10 days. My concern is that I believe her placenta started to separate and she was going to have a red bag delivery but during the process the red bag broke before being pushed completely out, as the red bag started coming out about the time the baby's shoulder was coming thru. Do u think she needs more than just an oxytocin shot and antibiotics, mare cleaned out fine and within 30 minutes of delivery, not going to re-breed.

Your vet has actually evaluated the animal, so I would go with their recommendation.

As long as the placenta was complete, I probably wouldn't do more than oxytocin on one of my mares, although I wouldn't breed her on a "foal heat" (~10 day post-abortion heat) and would want a clean culture ad cytology - or even culture and biopsy - before re-breeding.
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!
