Impending abortion? Help advice please???

Sometimes the pregnancy doesn't go as expected and the foal is lost. Here you can share information and perhaps learn why it happened and/or how to prevent a reocurrence.

Impending abortion? Help advice please???

Postby Juliewilliams987 » Sat Oct 13, 2012 12:58 am

Hi, I have a young mare, bred 3rd June. I'm worried that she might abort foal. We moved 2 weeks ago across Europe approx 1600 km to a warmer climate. I had a professional company to move the mares who rested frequently with a few days overnight stabling along the way. My concern is that the mares vulva looks incredibly loose and saggy with occasionally a slight gape in the middle. Is this a sign that she could loose her foal? I have another mare that travelled with her that was also bred but later, her vulva is very tight (but it is possible that she may not be in foal as we have had problems with absorbing ) both mares are fit and healthy. I'm not sure if the vulva shape has always been the same as she was with a friend for the last couple of months being broken. There are no other visible signs.

Am I just paranoid that the journey will cause the mare to abort or is this normal? I will post some pics later.

Thanks
Julie

A relaxed vulva in itself is not an indication of impending pregnancy loss - given that you have moved to a warmer climate though, it may well be an indication that she is hotter!

If you have any doubts, have the mare checked by a veterinarian.
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!
