Expired Lutalyse question

Sometimes the pregnancy doesn't go as expected and the foal is lost. Here you can share information and perhaps learn why it happened and/or how to prevent a reocurrence.

Expired Lutalyse question

Postby Chica91 » Wed Jun 07, 2017 8:04 pm

Hi there! I am 34 weeks pregnant and my husband has been administrating hormones for me. My mare ovulated 7 days post foaling but had a lot of fluid and her cervix was still wide open (I could easily put a fist through it). I went ahead and bred her. I followed with lavaging daily and oxytocin every 6 hours for 5 days until her cervix closed. I was not very optimistic and I always saw some fluid in her uterus. I checked her at 12 days post ovulation and saw quite a bit of fluid and no embryo just as I had expected. I saw the CL and several small follicles. I asked my husband to give her 2cc's of Lutalyse to short cycle her. I brought her in today at 14 days post ovulation and to my surprise her uterus was clean, the CL was still there and there was a healthy looking 14 day embryo. I feel so stupid for not waiting a couple days to recheck. Anyways, my husband managed to find an expired bottle of Lutalyse and that is what he gave her. It expired in 2009. My question is, do you think there is a chance the pregnancy is still viable or should I expect it to abort?
