Calculation of semen

Postby Lexi » Sat Apr 06, 2013 7:37 am

I use a semen counter (Jr) when extending once dose. What is the calculation when I want to extend all at the same time? I normally send 30cc x 2 when shipping.

Example:

60 ml of raw
311.4 mill

Jr gave me
3.4 raw to 21.6 extender (Inra) for 1 dose

I'm not completely sure what you are looking for, but you can always use our semen calculator which offers far more options than any of the calculations performed by sperm counters.

What I think you may be looking for is the following (based on your figures above):

As you want a final concentration of between 25 and 50 million sperm/ml, and as all photometric semen counters can be in error by up to 20%, we generally target a final concentration of 35 m/ml when using them.

So, you have 311 m/ml, and you want 35 m/ml, so 311 ÷ 35 = 8.8 (call it 9)
So now we know we need to divide it 9 times, of which 1 part will be semen and 8 parts extender. You have 60 ml semen so you would have to add 480 ml of extender (60 x 8) to get a final total volume of 540 ml.
Just to check, divide the total number of sperm in the ejaculate by the final volume and the result should be close to 35:

(311 x 60) ÷ 540 = 34.5
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!

I just got a Quick Check Jr. I think I read it calculates the dose to be 750 million per dose instead of 1 - 2 billion? I just use the concentration # and do the math myself, I shoot for 37 million/ml dilution, 50ml dose.
