Not Quite through - Katie's Foal Watch

Postby wolfwoman » Sat Jul 28, 2012 12:31 am

Well, I thought we were through for the year, but I recently discovered we are not. Katie is the Standard Jennet we rescued 3 years ago with her BFF Snickers. Katie was scanned in foal at the time, but never delivered. She must have slipped her foal. She was bred to our new Jack Pancho (formerly Capone)last year, but there was no indication that she was in foal. I went out in the pasture Tuesday and noticed she has gotten very wide. I felt her udder and it is enlarging. I also felt the baby move a lot! Her last breeding date was September 11, of last year, so her "due date" is September 11 of this year (Donkeys average 12 month gestations). I am moving her and Snickers into the "Maternity Ward" this weekend. Another baby donkey on the way, WOOHOO! :D I am hoping the filly/Jennet fairy will visit Katie, but if not, a healthy mom and baby are our ultimate goal. (We have to put Snickers in with Katie or Snickers would tear the fence down to get to her. She sees herself as Katie's protector.) Guess I'll restock the foaling kit and put my sign back up in the foaling stall. You remember -
"One thing hanging - gelding, two things hanging - mare, three things hanging stallion". :~)

Katie foaled a gorgeous gray Jack colt yesterday morning at 3:30 am. Mama and baby are doing well. Katie is a great mom! As soon as the baby was up and wobbling around, he came over to me. He is the sweetest, friendliest baby I have ever seen! (He takes that after his mother.) :D The vet checked him and his IgG is great! Nursing well, passing stool, playing and sleeping well. We have named him Jasper. I will take new pics and post this weekend. ]

Jos, how could you possibly doubt me ? :~) He dropped soon after birth, so unless Jennets now have penises and testicles, it's a Jack! :D

Thanks, by the way!
