Showing a new foal

Postby mynutmeg » Fri Mar 15, 2013 12:35 pm

Whats the youngest it's ok to travel and show a foal?
Mare is 'due' 14th May, vet examined about 3 weeks ago and stated he thinks she'll foal on May 4th (brave vet :o )
The first show I would like to do is June 8th but am unsure if thats too early for the foal?
Show rules are on the grounds by about 9.30, can't leave till after parade at about 3.30. I will be in a trailer with no partition so can pop mare and foal in there together.
Also whats the best way to manage mare and foal at a show?

I would forget the show on the 8th of June i were you. foal tend to look thin and very leggy until they are about 6 weeks - 2 months twhen they start to fill out abit. If you are up against any foals born february - march you most probably would not stand a chance. We went to a grading last year and foal as young a one week were pulled of lorries but did not do as well as the older foals. I would look for shows starting July for your young one giving you a few more weeks to get the handling down to a fine art and allowing little one a change to build up some more immunity.
