Mare ultrasound pictures...Help

Postby katehanson » Sun Jan 27, 2013 5:10 pm

If this post comes up twice, I'm sorry. It booted me out.
I feel like an idiot posting this, but I'm looking for some other eyes...just in case. I had two mares checked in foal that bagged up on me. I've done some ultrasounding in the past, but never on late gestations. I am good at finding folicles and early pregnancies. I know later gestation is harder to ultrasound because they go "in hiding" and usually you can't get in that far. So, hopefully I'm not as big of an idiot as I feel and have the right spot.
It's to cold up here to shave bellies and do it that way. Anyway, if anyone is any good at this, will you please look at these images and tell me what you think. I'm putting two links cause I'm not sure whice to use. I also have the cineloop if that's better.

OK... with the caveat that looking at ultrasound images without a point of reference (i.e. one's hand in the mare!) can be difficult unless there's something very obvious, my guess about the two images would be this:

The top one shows a fetus viewed from above, with the front quarters towards the top of the image, with the neck twisting slightly to the left and the ribs visible, then the pelvis at the bottom of the image.

The second image shows I think in those three black circles towards the upper right portion of the image, a cross section of the umbilicus. There are in fact usually four "channels" visible in the umbilicus - veins and arteries. I discussed a similar image in this thread.
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!

Thank You!!!! The first one you discribed just what I saw. The second one, Issy's, I wasn't sure about but you rested my mind. Sorry they aren't the best pictures. I'm a bit slow on hitting the freeze button since I'm a bit disabled. My husband says I need to quit doubting myself. Thank You so much for taking the time to look them over.
