Vaginal sponges?

Use of exogenous hormones in the mare to induce estrus; maintain or end pregnancy; and also the use of hormones to stimulate or quieten stallions.

Vaginal sponges?

Postby koolkas2 » Sun Mar 03, 2013 1:33 pm

Does anyone use vaginal sponges to synchronize mares? My vet suggested it for my 5 mares who are under lights since Jan 1st. I'm not too fond of daily injections, at least one of these mares is a needle freak.

Unfortunately your profile does not show what part of the world you are in, so this may not apply to you!

In New Zealand and Australia, there is a product called "MareCue" which is a vaginal CIDR implant which is fairly widespread in use. It secretes progesterone.

There are some CIDRs used in the UK, but I am not sure if MareCue is available there. Cattle CIDRs tend to fall out of mares owing to a slightly different conformation.

Any vaginal introduction of progestin - be it by CIDR, sponge or liquid - will produce a transient vaginitis and/or cervicitis, the severity of which will be mare and protocol dependent. Typically this has resolved by the time of breeding as there is a 5 day or so delay from cessation of treatment to onset of estrus.

I am a little puzzled as to what your vet was suggesting you might inject, as prostaglandin will not work in transitional mares, there being no CL present. BET Pharm in Kentucky USA have a biorelease Altrenogest which is a single injection lasting 13 days which is good if you happen to be in the USA. It is not available elsewhere.

If you want to stick with a method other than injection, the use of Regumate is the most normal and I am also a little puzzled why your veterinarian would not have suggested that!!

Located in Canada. Too sad this single injection isn't available here !

Can't tell why he suggested that! I will have to check with him I guess. He does mostly cattle so he must be used to CIDR...
