Cryptorchid

Postby glenhillfarm » Tue Nov 26, 2013 6:09 pm

I recently vetted a young (2 1/2) stallion. During the PPE the vet discovered that the colt was a cryptorchid. Is there a surgery that can be preformed that will cause the retained testicle to drop? Or is gelding the only option?
Thanks in advance.

By the age of 2½ one is generally getting to the point of what is down is down and what is up is up... there are instances of the second testicle descending as late as the 6 year-old year, but they are rare, and are typically examples of testicles retained low in the inguinal canal. These may also respond favourably to the use of hCG which is something you might want to discuss with your veterinarian.

One word of caution - although it has not been definitively identified as hereditary in the equine, cryptorchidism is generally considered to be likely to be a heritable trait. The primary reason that it has not been confirmed to be hereditary is that the gene has not been identified in the equine, but it has been shown to carry a hereditary component in other species. This is of course of concern in a stallion prospect.

To specifically answer your question - there is not a surgery that will cause the testicle to descend, and even if there were, after being retained for a significant duration in a warmer climate (closer to the body) atrophy and an inability to produce sperm would be a likely sequela.

Take a look at this article on our website for more details about the various types of cryptorchidism.
