Stallion finds maiden mares difficult to penetrate

Postby tabitha12 » Wed May 29, 2013 4:13 pm

We have an experienced stallion - has sired foals previously before coming to us to stand at stud. He is gentle, experienced and respectful - covers our mares (who have already been covered and foaled before) - with no problems, it is really a very simple affair. He teases them, is patient, when they are ready, he mounts and penetrates with no problem whatsoever. All our mares are pregnant.

However, he has experienced some difficulties with certain mares that have some in for stud - and I can only put it down to the fact that the common thing between them, is that they are all maiden mares. They are not being at all difficult - have stood quite still, have been in heat etc etc.
He managed to cover one, by himself one time, the other time we "helped" him ( This particular mare is now in foal) but the "trying" that he did was very awkward and he made himself very sore. He does nothing any different with these mares than the things he does with the "experienced" mares, but instead of mounting and then penetrating, he seems to go absolutely everywhere but where he should be going - to the point where he then "bells" and we have to start all over again. The poor mares start to get fed up! Sometimes we have to call it a day and stop.
I now have yet another maiden mare that I need to cover - same thing is happening - however she is sharp and a kicker - and whilst she is standing now for him, "helping" him this time isn't an option.

Everything I read seems to cover how maiden mares can be awkward sometimes, but I can't find anything about stallions finding them difficult - even though they are being really good and text book.

Does anyone have any advice please:or has anyone come across this problem? :8:

I presume by helping him you mean that you are manually guiding his penis into the vagina? This is actually good breeding practice and should be done ever time, as it avoids excessive contamination of the penis (and therefore vagina) and also prevents the possibility of accidental anal penetration which can prove fatal to the mare.

If the current mare that you are breeding is presenting problems, you should consult your veterinarian about the use of tranquilizers when covering her, or AI.

The final point to consider with maiden mares is the possibility of the presence of a hymen which should be manually broken prior to the mare being bred.
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!

Thanks - with the other mares he always just mounts and goes straight in.

Will try to guide him straight away - rather than leaving him to do it. (If I can actually guide him - he seems to know he is going to find it hard and gets quite uptight - which makes him bell really quickly - and then there is no way it will ever go in!!!!)

I just find it very odd because another stallion we have, breeds maidens no differently, he doesn't have any trouble at all just getting on and going straight in (and he is actually a younger and less experienced stallion)

I am just really worried as alot of our coverings seem to be for people with maiden mares
