Stallion Impotence?

Postby starlight » Mon Dec 31, 2012 2:12 am

Hello all,

I have a 5 year old Quarter stallion that has never been bred before. I received him from my grandfather who decided it was time to get out of the equine business. He is well built, both testicles are fully dropped, and looks great for breeding.

However, the issue comes when I introduce him to my 4 year old mare. He starts getting vocal when she is in heat, but never drops. He exhibits behavior that leads me to believe that he is very interested, but he doesn't drop. He'll sniff her, talk, try to mount her, but can't seem to "get it up." His sheath shakes, as if something is trying to work, but so far I haven't seen him drop once, even alone. He was never used for show that I know of, so getting disciplined for dropping probably isn't a cause.

Could he just be physically unable to get an erection?

The first thing for you to check is that his sheath is not so clogged with smegma (that nasty stinky black stuff) that it's glueing it closed. That sometimes happens and produces the effect you are seeing. You can do this by using mineral oil on your hand and carefully inserting it into the sheath and feeling around for the glans (the head) of the penis. Make sure that it is free and not glued to the side of the sheath. It goes without saying (I hope!) that you need to be careful and not get yourself kicked or otherwise hurt while doing this!!!

If all seems to be in order, I would suggest a consultation with a veterinarian or reproductive facility that specializes in stallions (such as we do). They may attempt tranquilization to see if he can drop (do not use acepromazine or any other phenothiazine tranquilizer!!).

Good luck and let us know how you make out!!
We're always happy to try and help, but don't forget to check the articles section
of the website too, which has a search engine to help you look for answers!
