Semen gel

Postby atstudranch » Thu Nov 22, 2012 1:03 am

I have been working with this stallion for over a year and had testing done on his previous semen and he was fantastic (post thaw frozen 60% motility, great vol. fabulious morphology ect) we've had several collections this year and several pregnancies. he had normal gel amounts nothing to worry about, just a bit in the filter to throw out and great semen quailty. we have have not changed his food or anything but we did take a trip to a stallion show for a few days but, again, no change of food. Since he's been back the volume and type of gel that he is producing is insane. sticky, stringy and lots of it. he is ejaculating and the semen is still swiming at the 24 hr test, but the gel is going through the filter even when filtered 3 times and it's very stringy & sticky and abnormal for him. we even tried different filters to see if they were just defective but he's just sticky stringy gel junk. (but the spermatazoa are there and moving, not as peppy as in the normal fluids)
have you ever heard of this? will it go away? could someone have slipped him something that would have caused this? how can we get it to go away?
we have inseminated a few mares to see if fertility was affected but this is seriouisly drastic changes. he was collected the morning of the event and it was a stunning, normal collection, the week or so after the event..... massively messy and seriously abnormal for him.

There are quite a few recognised possible reasons for an increase in gel, although they are not definitive (i.e. these reasons may also be present and not cause the effect), while there are other unknown causes that just result in it happening sometimes without reason.

One reason is increased teasing. This may be related to your issue in that when he was at the show, he may have been receiving sexual stimulation from the presence of other horses (even though he may not have been demonstrating it). That can sometimes upset the balances.

Seasonal variations, along with age-related variations can also occur.

Increase in AV temperature can also sometimes be an issue.

Gel is just one of those frustrating things that one has to deal with and sometimes has no apparent cause. Try setting up a dual in-line filter on the disposable liner of your AV, which filters earlier in the collection process. Gel can have a detrimental effect on sperm longevity, so the sooner (and faster) you filter it out, the better.

We gave him a "cold" AV this time. He didn't "like" his "cold" AV but he worked things out after a few tries and things looked much more normal today! The gel didn't go through the filter and was a normal amount that we would expect if he tried a few times (not mass amounts like we were getting just after the show) Thank you so much for the advice. We had not changed the temp on the AV from before the show to after the show but changeing it this morning was just what he needed to get a normal collection.

Glad to hear of the improvement! :)

You might try a slight increase in temperature and see if he becomes happy with it, but doesn't revert to his previous excessive gel situation!!

Good luck!!
